Sciatica is a condition usually characterized by back pain. This back pain is caused by a problem with the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back (the spine) down the back of each of your legs. If this nerve becomes damaged, it can cause chronic pain and uncomfortable pressure. You may be suffering from sciatica if you experience the following:

  • Pain that worsens when you sit down, cough or sneeze
  • Numbness, weakness or tingling in one leg
  • Pain in your lower back that can spread to your hips, buttocks or legs

Radiculopathy is also caused by pressure or injury to the spine. Radiculopathy occurs when nerve roots in your spinal cord become pinched. Radiculopathy can be caused by a variety of conditions, including:

  • Herniated disc
  • Sciatica
  • Compression fractures
  • Diabetes

You may be at risk for radiculopathy due to the following factors:

  • Aging
  • Being overweight
  • Bad posture
  • Inherited bone conditions
  • Improper heavy lifting

Symptoms of radiculopathy involve pain in the neck, shoulder, upper back or arm. The pain can be accompanied with weakness or numbness, usually experienced on one side of the body.
